Gravity Ice Hybrid Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Gravity Ice Hybrid is a medium-feel mattress constructed with pressure-relieving memory foam and supportive pocketed coils.
  • A breathable cover and steady airflow help the mattress sleep cool.
  • The foam layers conform closely to cushion the body and promote even alignment, making this mattress a solid choice for side sleepers.

Gravity Ice Mattress Overview

Gravity Ice Mattress Overview

Gravity launched in 2017 following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The company’s flagship, the Gravity Blanket, has quickly become one of the most popular weighted blankets on the market. Gravity has gone on to introduce additional sleep products. This review will take a look at the brand’s first mattress model, the Gravity Ice Hybrid.

The Gravity Ice Hybrid is constructed with two memory foam comfort layers. The mattress has a medium feel, which rates as a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale, so sleepers should expect close body-contouring. The hybrid also contains a transitional polyfoam layer and a pocketed coil support core reinforced with high-density foam. A cover composed of a cooling fabric surface and mesh side panels encases the entire mattress. Altogether, the Gravity Ice Hybrid measures 12 inches thick.

Our Gravity Ice Hybrid mattress review will include an overview of this model’s construction and composition specs, available sizes, prices, and performance ratings based on owner experiences and our own product testing. We’ll also compare the bed to a few similarly constructed mattresses and discuss Gravity’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • People who weigh up to 230 pounds. Due to its medium feel and close contouring, the Gravity Ice Hybrid is best suited to people in the lightweight and average weight groups.
  • Side and back sleepers. The mattress cushions the shoulders and hips, which can improve alignment and alleviate pressure for side sleepers, while a sturdy support system ensures an even surface for most back sleepers.
  • Those who tend to sleep hot. Steady airflow through the coil system helps the mattress core maintain a comfortable temperature. The hybrid’s cover is also composed of highly breathable fabric to keep the surface cool.
  • Value seekers. Compared to other hybrid models, the Gravity Ice Hybrid’s price-point is well below average.

Not Recommended for...

  • People who weigh more than 230 pounds. For some sleepers in the heavyweight group, the Gravity Ice Hybrid will feel too soft and sink to an excessive degree.
  • Shoppers seeking twin, twin XL, or California king sizes. The Gravity Ice Hybrid is currently available in full, queen, and king sizes only. Comparatively, most competing models are sold in all six standard mattress sizes.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Gravity Ice Hybrid. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the Gravity Ice Hybrid has earned mostly favorable performance ratings. Check out our full breakdown below for a detailed look at each performance category.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Gravity Ice Hybrid across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Gravity Ice Hybrid Constructed?

Cover

The Gravity Ice Hybrid’s cover features a top panel made of fabric designed to keep the surface cool and retain a minimal amount of body heat. This material has a weight of 450 grams per square meter (GSM), which is on the heavier side. The side panels of the cover are composed of breathable mesh material, and the bottom panel is made of durable polyester.

Comfort Layers

The Gravity Ice Hybrid contains two comfort layers, both of which are constructed from low-density memory foam with an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 15-20. These layers collectively measure 3 inches thick, resulting in deep contouring and “body-hugging” feel commonly associated with memory foam.

The top memory foam layer is infused with cooling gel, which is designed to draw body heat away from the surface to help maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Transitional Layer

The hybrid’s transitional layer is located beneath the bottom memory foam layer and measures 1 inch thick. Composed of high-density polyfoam, this component is designed to prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress and coming into contact with the coil system.

Support Layers

The Gravity Ice Hybrid’s support core consists of 6-inch pocketed coils over a 2-inch base layer of high-density polyfoam. These components stabilize the mattress quite well, and the coils promote steady airflow to keep the interior cool. However, the thick comfort layers and medium feel mean some sleepers will notice uncomfortable sinkage, particularly around the perimeter of the bed.

Mattress Height

The Gravity Ice Hybrid measures 12 inches thick, making it a high-profile model. Above-average height means enough space for 3 inches of memory foam without sacrificing support. As a result, the mattress offers a balance of body-contouring and sturdy reinforcement.

Product Name Firmness Level Thickness Comfort Layer Components Cover Components Support Core Components
Gravity Ice Hybrid Medium (5) 12″ 6″ Pocketed Coils
2″ HD Polyfoam
1″ 3.125 PCF Gel Memory Foam (15-20 ILD)
2″ 3.1325 PCF Memory Foam (15-20 ILD)
Ice Cooling Fabric (Top Panel)
Black Mesh (Side Panels)
Polyester (Bottom Panel)

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Gravity Ice Hybrid has a medium (5) feel. Since the top two layers are composed of memory foam, most people will feel close contouring from head to toe when they lie down on the mattress. However, the coil system provides sturdy reinforcement and there will also be some responsiveness. This makes the Gravity Ice Hybrid well-suited to people who enjoy a balance of conforming and support, or those who prefer to “sleep on” and sleep “in” their mattress at the same time.

The cooling cover is another notable aspect of this mattress. The breathable surface material and mesh side panels regulate the surface temperature very well, and this offsets the memory foam’s heat-absorbing properties to a noticeable degree. People who typically feel too warm on bed with memory foam layers will probably find the Gravity Ice Hybrid much more comfortable by comparison.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take an in-depth look at performance ratings for the Gravity Ice Hybrid. This mattress is fairly new, so each rating is primarily based on our own in-house testing, but we also drew from a small sample of verified owner experiences.

Durability

The Gravity Ice Hybrid debuted in 2020, so we haven’t had enough time to evaluate its longevity against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating is based on other factors such as in-house testing and the quality of construction and materials.

We expect the Gravity Ice Hybrid to perform for about six and a half to seven years before a replacement is needed. This is typical for a hybrid with memory foam comfort layers. This model’s coil system and base foam layer should provide decent stability, but the memory foam will likely begin to deteriorate more quickly and develop body impressions. The medium feel may also mean more sinkage along the perimeter, which can become deeper over time and make it harder to get in and out of bed.

Owners can extend the lifespan of their Gravity Ice Hybrid to some extent by rotating the mattress head to foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Gravity Ice Hybrid for motion isolation, we asked two of our sleep testers to lie down on the mattress side by side. One tester moved around and got on and off the mattress while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. For a hybrid, this model performed very well during these evaluations. This can be attributed to its top two layers of memory foam, which absorb movement very well and prevent excessive transfer.

While the coils create some surface-level responsiveness that can ripple across the surface, the foam was effective at reducing the transfer. People who wake up easily due to their sleep partner’s movements should be able to sleep soundly on the Gravity Ice Hybrid.

Off-Gassing

We noticed some moderate off-gassing after unboxing the Gravity Ice Hybrid. This is normal for a bed with memory foam and/or polyfoam layers because these materials emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While relatively harmless, VOCs carry a distinct chemical smell that many people find unpleasant.

We checked the mattress a few days later and found the odor had almost completely dissipated, thanks in part to the open coil system promoting airflow that flushes out the VOCs. We suggest placing the mattress in a ventilated room for a day or two after unboxing it.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the Gravity Ice Hybrid for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on the mattress with a pressure-mapping sensor to monitor sensitive spots throughout the body. The testers also switched positions to see if pressure increased or decreased on their sides, back, and stomach.

Thanks to the thick memory foam layers, the mattress provides above-average pressure relief for a hybrid. That said, the medium feel also means heavier individuals may sink more and experience added pressure as a result. Side and back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds reported the highest levels of pressure relief.

Temperature Neutrality

The Gravity Ice Hybrid is constructed with a cooling cover and a coil system that promotes steady airflow throughout the interior to help the mattress core maintain a comfortable temperature. However, the memory foam also absorbs some body heat that may cause people to sleep too warm. This is especially true for people who weigh more than 230 pounds because they will sink the deepest into the surface.

This rating is typical for a memory foam hybrid. Although these models don’t sleep as hot as all-foam beds, they lack the breathable features of latex hybrids and innersprings with thinner foam layers.

Edge Support

To evaluate the Gravity Ice Hybrid for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter as one might do when getting in and out of bed. They also took turns lying near the edges to check for feelings of “roll-off,” which are akin to being ejected by the mattress.

Mattresses with soft to medium feels like the Gravity Ice Hybrid tend to sink more, which can make getting in and out of bed more difficult and create feelings of instability when people sleep near the edges. However, the coil system provides some push-back that prevents excessive sinkage.

Noise

As is the case with most hybrids, the Gravity Ice Hybrid is virtually silent straight out of its box. The comfort layers muffle any sounds produced by the coil system, making the mattress a good option for people who awaken easily due to noise. As the mattress ages, owners may notice more squeaks and creaks from the interior, but this shouldn’t be a major problem for the majority of its overall lifespan.

Sex

Although individual preferences vary, most couples prefer responsive mattresses for sex that promote easy movement across the surface. The Gravity Ice Hybrid has a medium feel and thick memory foam layers, which may cause uncomfortable sinkage during amorous activities that some liken to fighting against the mattress. The coils provide some reinforcement and stability, but middle-of-the-road edge support means couples may not be able to use the entire surface of the mattress and instead be confined to the middle.

At the same time, the memory foam contours closely to deliver good traction that can be helpful for couples who maintain the same position for longer periods of time. Low noise potential also makes the Gravity Ice Hybrid fairly discreet compared to creakier hybrids and innersprings.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

The most favorable ratings for the Gravity Ice Hybrid came from our testers who weigh less than 130 pounds. This can be attributed to the bed’s medium feel and close body-contouring. Side sleepers in this group receive ample cushioning around the shoulders and hips, which can improve spinal alignment and alleviate pressure throughout the body, while lightweight back sleepers can rest comfortably without sinking too much around the midsection.

Stomach sleepers were the outliers for the lightweight group, which is fairly common due to the unique demands of this position. Many people carry a disproportionate amount of weight in their stomachs, and sleeping face down can cause the entire body to sink into the mattress. That said, our stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds didn’t sink to an excessive degree and still felt reasonably comfortable.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Ratings were positive among the average weight group, but not to the same extent as their lightweight peers. Side sleepers in the range of 130-230 pounds felt most comfortable on the Gravity Ice Hybrid thanks to the deep contouring and padding for areas along the spine. None of them felt added pressure and all noted adequate support for their heavier areas.

Back and stomach sleepers in this group gave the mattress good ratings, but with the caveat that there was some sinkage between the shoulders and hips that caused the surface to feel somewhat uneven. Medium firm to firm is typically the favored firmness level for these sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

As expected, the heavyweight testers did not find the Gravity Ice Hybrid as comfortable, and this was consistent across all position groups. For side sleepers, the contouring alleviated some pressure but they still sank a bit in areas where they carry the most weight. The same was true for back sleepers, who found their head, neck, and legs rested on the surface while their midsections sank lower.

The least favorable ratings for the mattress came from stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds. Excessive sinkage was a common issue. Over time, this can cause aches and pains to develop in the neck, shoulders, and hips. We recommend a firmer mattress for heavyweight stomach sleepers.

How Does the Gravity Ice Hybrid Compare to Other Beds?

When shopping for a new mattress, we recommend comparing as many different brands and models as possible in order to find the best match for personal needs and preferences. In the next section, we’ll see how the Gravity Ice Hybrid compares to a few similarly constructed models.

Gravity Ice Hybrid vs. Bear Hybrid

The Bear Hybrid is similar to the Gravity Ice Hybrid thanks in part to its cooling cover made from Celliant fabric, a material designed to absorb heat, convert it into infrared energy, and transmit this energy back into the sleeper’s body. This process has a cooling effect that helps regulate surface temperatures, which is similar to the experience sleepers have with the Gravity Ice fabric.

The Bear Hybrid is medium firm (6), so it won’t contour as closely to the sleeper’s body as the Gravity ice Hybrid. The coils are also a bit thicker, making the mattress feel more supportive and responsive by comparison. This means back and stomach sleepers will likely prefer the Bear Hybrid, while the Gravity Ice Hybrid is better suited to side sleepers – but this also depends on body weight and personal preference. Motion isolation is a bit better for the Gravity Ice Hybrid thanks to its memory foam layers, whereas the Bear Hybrid contains a more responsive polyfoam comfort layer.

The Bear Hybrid costs a bit less than the Gravity Ice Hybrid, but probably not enough to influence many buying decisions. Shoppers should choose one model over the other based on their firmness preferences, sleep position, and likelihood of waking up due to motion transfer instead.

Gravity Ice Hybrid vs. DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a luxury hybrid constructed with a foam-padded Euro-top over a memory foam comfort layer. The mattress is medium firm (6.5), but the Euro-top creates a plush feel for the surface that makes it feel similar to the Gravity Ice Hybrid.

The DreamCloud’s cover is composed of a cashmere blend that is very breathable, while its coil system circulates steady air currents to maintain a cool core temperature. As a result, this mattress and the Gravity Ice Hybrid are equally suitable for hot sleepers. Edge support is a bit stronger for the DreamCloud and the mattress offers more responsiveness for sex, but the Gravity Ice Hybrid performs better in terms of pressure relief and motion isolation.

The DreamCloud costs significantly less than the Gravity Ice Hybrid, so the shopper’s budget may play a role in their purchasing decision. If price is not a factor, then they should consider personal preferences for firmness and contouring, edge support, pressure relief, and motion isolation.

Gravity Ice Hybrid vs. Helix Midnight

Helix Sleep offers a slew of memory foam hybrid mattresses, each of which is specifically designed for certain weight groups and sleep positions. The Helix Midnight is most comparable to the Gravity Ice Hybrid due to its medium (5.5) feel and deep contouring, but there are some notable differences as well.

For one, the Helix Midnight has a thicker coil system. This creates a more supportive and responsive feel for the mattress. Even though its top memory foam layer is thicker than the Gravity Ice Hybrid’s, the Helix Midnight does not alleviate pressure to the same extent, nor does it isolate as much motion. In terms of similarities, both mattresses sleep relatively cool – but they may also sink along the edges a bit too much for some people.

Since the Gravity Ice Hybrid costs significantly more than the Helix Midnight – and because the mattresses are fairly similar – we expect price-point to be the major factor for most shoppers. However, those who want more contouring should opt for the former, and those who prefer more support should choose the latter instead.

Gravity Ice Hybrid vs. The WinkBed

The WinkBed is a hybrid model available in four firmness levels. Customers can choose between medium soft (4.5), medium firm (6.5), and firm (7.5). There is also the WinkBed Plus, a firm (8) model specifically designed for heavier individuals.

There are some notable construction differences that set the WinkBed apart from the Gravity Ice Hybrid. Standard WinkBed models feature polyfoam comfort layers, foam-encased microcoil transitional layers, and zoned pocketed coil support cores, while the WinkBed Plus swaps out the microcoils for a thick latex transitional layer. All of these models feel noticeably more responsive and supportive than the Gravity Ice Hybrid, resulting in more springiness and less motion isolation. The zoned pocketed coils also provide excellent edge support with little to no sinkage along the perimeter.

The WinkBed and WinkBed Plus cost a bit more than the Gravity Ice Hybrid, but the price-points are still in line with the average hybrid model. Those who prefer a firmer and more responsive feel should opt for the WinkBed, while couples and people with sharp pressure points will probably prefer the Gravity Ice Hybrid.
