Tuft & Needle vs. Helix – Our 2022 Mattress Comparison

Written by Tuck Staff

The Bottom Line.

  • The T&N Mattress from Tuft & Needle is made from graphite-infused polyfoam that alleviates pain and pressure points, and also isolates motion for couples.
  • The Helix Midnight is a memory foam hybrid with a balanced, ‘Medium’ feel and consistent temperature neutrality. Customers can choose from 10″ and 14″ designs.
  • Both beds are sold at below-average price-points.

Tuft & Needle vs. Helix Mattress Overview

Tuft & Needle vs. Helix Mattress Overview

Tuft & Needle was established in 2012. Its flagship bed, the T&N Mattress, is constructed with a comfort layer of 2.8 PCF polyfoam and a support core of 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam. The T&N Mattress is ‘Medium Firm,’ or 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Helix began selling mattresses in 2015, and currently offers hybrid models. For this comparison we’ve chosen the Helix Midnight, a memory foam hybrid that is ‘Medium’ in terms of firmness, or 5.5. The Helix Midnight is available in two designs.

The ‘Standard’ has one memory foam comfort layer, a transitional polyfoam layer, and a single-gauge pocketed coil support core reinforced with a high-density polyfoam base. The ‘LUXE’ has similar construction, but also includes an extra memory foam comfort layer and zoned, multi-gauge pocketed coils.

The T&N Mattress (an all-polyfoam bed) and the Helix Midnight (a memory foam hybrid) are constructed from different materials, yet they share many key similarities as well. This page will compare the unique advantages and drawbacks of each bed, along with the customer policies for both Tuft & Needle and Helix.

Sleep Position Ratings

T&N Mattress

Due to its ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5) feel, the T&N Mattress is optimal for sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. Those who weigh less may find the mattress too firm, and that it does not conform to their body enough. Heavier individuals tend to feel quite comfortable on the T&N Mattress. Comparatively, many sleepers in the above-average weight group find most other all-foam beds too soft and saggy.

Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight (both standard and LUXE models) have ‘Medium’ (5.5) firmness, making them ideal for those who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, as well as lighter or heavier individuals who prefer a balance of body conforming and firm support. The Midnight LUXE’s 14-inch profile is also a good choice for larger people since this demographic often finds lower-profile beds difficult to get on and off of compared to thicker ones.

Please note that the data listed below reflects all of Helix’s current mattresses, and not specifically the Midnight.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Helix Midnight if...

  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to movement or noise

How Is the T&N Mattress Built?

The T&N Mattress has a simple, dual-layer design consisting of a 2.8 PCF polyfoam comfort layer and a 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam support core. Because the bed is ‘Medium Firm,’ it conforms to a moderate extent and won’t sink as deeply as other all-foam mattresses. The bed also isolates motion transfer to a noticeable extent and produces no noise when bearing weight, making it a good option for couples.

At 10 inches thick, the T&N Mattress has a thickness profile that is on par with the average mattress. However, it weighs 72 pounds in a queen size – light even by all-foam mattress standards – and should be relatively easy to lift and rotate as recommended for most owners.

How Is the Helix Midnight Built?

There are key construction differences between the two Helix Midnight designs. The standard model has a memory foam comfort layer and a transitional polyfoam layer; these components offer ‘Medium’ firmness and close body conforming for sleepers. The bed also has a pocketed coil support core and a high-density polyfoam base, which offers good reinforcement and helps minimize sinkage around the edges. This model also has a dual-layer cover made of stretch polyester.

The Helix Midnight LUXE is 14 inches tall – 4 inches thicker than the standard model – with gel memory foam and standard memory foam comfort layers. This comfort system offers closer conforming than the standard model, though it is also considered ‘Medium.’ The LUXE has a pillow-top cover with a layer of phase-change material, which partially accounts for the profile difference with the standard model.

Another difference lies in the pocketed coils; the LUXE model features zoned coils, with higher-gauge (thinner) coils beneath the shoulders and lower-gauge (thicker) coils beneath the hips. This configuration offers targeted sleeper support. Like the standard Midnight, the Midnight LUXE also has a transitional polyfoam layer and a high-density polyfoam base.

It weighs 120 pounds in a queen size – 36 pounds heavier than the standard Midnight – and will be somewhat difficult to lift and rotate for most owners.
