How Is the Leesa Legend Mattress Constructed?
Cover
The Legend uses a hypoallergenic knitted cover with Leesa’s signature four-stripe design. The cover uses a mixed fabric constructed of 28% polyester, 28% recycled PES (derived from recycled water bottles), 19% organic cotton, 12% merino wool, 12% rayon, and 1% spandex. This cover has a plush feel, while the cotton and wool also help regulate temperature and wick moisture.
Comfort Layers
The Leesa Legend has three comfort layers. The first layer is 1 inch of ventilated 3 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) polyfoam with an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 13. PCF measures the density of the polyfoam. A density of 3 PCF is relatively dense, lending to its durability. ILD measures a foam’s firmness. An ILD of 13 is indicative of a relatively soft feel, which provides a gentle hug while allowing heat to dissipate through the ventilation holes.
The next layer is 1 inch of 4 PCF memory foam with an ILD of 12, which contours to the body to provide pressure relief. The density is close to midrange for memory foam, balancing contouring and temperature neutrality.
Finally, a 1.5-inch layer of pocketed microcoils offers targeted support and contouring. The head and leg ends of this layer use pocketed microcoils for extra pressure relief, while the middle section uses foam to provide extra support for the heaviest parts of the body.
Transitional Layer
A transition layer uses 1 inch of 2 PCF support foam with an ILD of 30 to prevent sleepers from sinking in against the coil support layer.
Support Layers
The coil system uses 6 inches of pocketed, 15-gauge coils. This coil gauge is close to the middle of the standard range, which means the coils are neither extremely thick nor extremely thin, striking a balance between support and conforming. High-density coils around the perimeter of the mattress provide extra edge support.
In total, the support layer features over 1,000 pocketed coils, which is more than many mattresses on the market. Having more coils often lends well to a mattress’s durability. Encasing the coils in pockets reduces motion transfer between the coils and allows them to move independently.
The final layer is 1 inch of high-density support foam, which is designed to provide a stable base for the rest of the mattress.
Mattress Height
The Leesa Legend is 12 inches thick, allowing room for three individual layers that combine into a substantial comfort layer totaling 3.5 inches. The comfort layer is supported by a 6-inch coil layer and two one inch transition layers. At 12 inches thick, the Leesa Legend is a high-profile mattress, so it may require deep-pocketed sheets.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
The Leesa Legend falls around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale, making it a medium-firm model. This is a popular firmness setting because it couples support and conforming.
The Legend has high point elasticity, compressing directly under the location where weight is applied rather than spreading out the compression over a wider surface area. While the Legend is medium-firm, its contouring may make it feel somewhat softer than latex and innerspring mattresses with similar firmness ratings.
Our sleep testers experienced a gentle hug from the Legend that made them feel like they were sleeping “in” the mattress rather than “on” the mattress. However, the Legend’s medium-firm feel and responsive foams prevented our testers from sinking in excessively, so they never felt trapped in the bed.
Ratings Breakdown
Performance Ratings
Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Leesa Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as verified owner and customer experiences with the mattress.
Durability
Since the Legend is Leesa’s newest mattress, there is not yet user data on how long the mattress lasts. Based on its construction and materials, we would anticipate that the Legend is likely to last at least as long as average, which is about 7 years for a foam hybrid mattress.
We’ve based this assessment largely on the high-quality coils and foams. The support layer features over 1,000 coils. Mattresses with higher coil counts like this often have greater durability. Additionally, the coils have a consistent width, so they are less likely to develop weak points than more traditional hourglass-shaped coils. The high-quality foams used in the comfort layers, transition layer, and support core further add to the durability.
Motion Isolation
Our sleep testers found that the Leesa Legend absorbed a significant amount of motion, though it did not completely isolate it. Our testers who sleep with partners noticed some movement on the mattress when their partners entered or exited the bed, but they did not feel like the motion transfer impacted their sleep significantly.
The high-point elasticity of most foam generally allows direct compression that absorbs motion and prevents it from being transferred across the surface of the mattress. The comfort layer of the Leesa Legend uses 2 inches of foam, while the transition layer employs another 1 inch. This is enough to significantly reduce motion transfer.
However, our sleep testers found that the bounce of the two coil layers led to some transfer. Since the coils are pocketed and move independently, however, the motion should not carry across the layer as much as it would on a mattress with connected springs.
Off-Gassing
When they first unpackaged the Leesa Legend Mattress, our testers noticed a slight odor. After one day, the smell had mostly dissipated. When they checked again after 72 hours, our testers did not notice any noticeable odors.
Off-gassing odors are typically caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are gases that synthetic foams tend to emit. VOCs are generally considered relatively harmless, but their odor may be displeasing to some sleepers who are sensitive to smells. While our testers noticed an initial off-gassing odor, they did not find it offensive, which could cut the amount of time needed to air out the mattress.
Pressure Relief
Our sleep testers were impressed with the Leesa’s Legend’s exceptional pressure relief. To test pressure buildup, we had sleepers in different weight groups lie on a sensory pad that mapped their pressure points. While there was some variation between weight groups, all of our testers agreed that pressure relief is one of the Leesa Legend’s greatest strong suits.
The Legend’s three comfort layers work together to cradle the body and reduce pressure points. A 1-inch layer of polyfoam and the 1-inch layer of memory foam work allowed our testers to sink in enough to enjoy a comfortable, pressure-relieving hug.
The 1.5-inch layer of pocketed microcoils further added to the balance of contouring and support. The head and leg ends of this layer use pocketed microcoils, which provide extra cushioning under the shoulders and legs. The middle section uses foam designed to prevent the sleeper’s midsection from sinking in too deeply.
Temperature Neutrality
Our sleep testers reported being cool and comfortable throughout the night.
Foam comfort layers often trap heat against the body. The Leesa Legend’s top comfort layer is ventilated to allow heat to dissipate, while the mattress cover also wicks away heat and moisture. The two layers of springs allow additional airflow through the mattress, which can help disperse heat buildup.
Edge Support
We had our testers in different weight groups sit near the perimeter of the bed to test out the edge support. Across all weight groups, our testers reported experiencing sturdy support and rising to a standing position with ease.
Our overnight testers also noted that the edge was strong enough to allow them full use of the mattress’s surface without feeling like they may roll off due to edge compression.
This strong perimeter may be beneficial for couples who require the full bed surface and for individuals who have trouble getting into or out of bed.
Noise
In our testing, the Leesa Legend was relatively quiet, but the pocketed coil layers produced some noise. Our testers reported hearing creaking from the coil layers, but the foam layers muffled this sound to an extent. While the Leesa Legend is quieter than many mattresses on the market, it may not be ideal for sleepers who are easily disturbed by mattress sounds.
Sex
The Leesa Legend offers bounce, responsiveness, and edge support, which are all generally beneficial for sex. The two spring layers give the Legend extra bounce. The foam in the comfort layers is quite responsive, cradling the body when weight is applied but quickly regaining its shape when that weight is removed. This responsiveness makes it easier to change positions and move across the mattress. Since the Legend features a sturdy edge, couples may also appreciate being able to use more of the surface of the bed.
Sleeper Ratings
Individuals may experience the same mattress differently based on their shape, weight, and sleep position. While sleep experience and comfort are inherently subjective, we’ve tested the Leesa Legend with sleepers from three different weight groups using three different sleep positions to get a clearer idea of how the Leesa Legend’s sleep experience may vary between individuals.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
While sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds generally prefer a soft or medium mattress, our lightweight sleep testers rated the Leesa Legend well for all sleep positions. At a 6.5 on the firmness scale, the Leesa Legend is slightly firmer than lightweight sleepers tend to like. However, our sleep testers found it offered a good balance of support and cradling.
Our back sleepers appreciated the support and felt it helped them maintain proper spinal alignment. Our side sleepers liked that the targeted support of the microcoil layer provided extra softness under their shoulders and legs. While our stomach sleepers also thought the Legend performed well, they noted that the medium-firmness felt slightly too firm.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.
Our sleep testers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds found the Leesa Legend performed well across all sleep positions, but they particularly enjoyed it for side and back sleeping.
When sleeping on their sides, our average weight testers experienced a gentle cradling from the two foam comfort layers. The zoned support of the microcoil layer provided additional contouring under their shoulders while preventing their hips from sinking in too deeply. Our back sleepers also appreciated the microcoil layer’s extra support for their midsections and felt the mattress provided a very good sleep experience. Our stomach sleepers rated the Leesa Legend well but felt it was slightly too firm.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often gravitate towards a medium-firm or firm setting, and the Leesa Legend falls right into this range. While all of our heavyweight testers felt the Legend was comfortable enough to provide a decent night’s sleep for any sleep position, their ratings varied across sleep positions.
Our heavyweight side sleepers were most enthusiastic about the Leesa Legend. The three comfort layers cradled them and provided relief from the sharp pressure points often associated with side sleeping. The targeted support of the microcoil layer prevented their midsections from sinking in too deeply. Our back sleepers also liked the zoned support of the microcoil layer, but they felt they still sunk in a little too deeply for proper spinal alignment. When sleeping on their stomachs, our heavyweight testers felt their midsections sunk in more than ideal despite the zoning of the microcoil layer.

How Does the Leesa Legend Compare to Other Beds?
When shopping for mattresses, comparing similar mattresses head-to-head can make it easier to see the key differences that set them apart. We’ll compare the Leesa Legend Mattress to six similar models so you can see how these options vary.
Leesa Legend vs. Leesa Original
The Leesa Original is Leesa’s all-foam model, while the Leesa Legend pairs foam and coils. Our testers rated both mattresses well, but they excel in different areas due to their construction differences.
The Leesa Original Mattress uses two comfort layers that combine to total four inches. At 3.5 inches, the Leesa Legend’s comfort layers are slightly thinner. While the Leesa Original’s comfort layers use exclusively foam, the Leesa Legend includes a layer of microcoils that provides targeted support and softness. The comfort layers of both mattresses provide superior pressure relief to many mattresses on the market. However, the construction of these layers lead to the Leesa Original providing a slightly deeper hugging sensation.
The Leesa Legend’s two layers of pocketed coils make for extra bounce and edge support, which may make it preferable for sleepers who struggle to change positions, get into or out of bed, and/or who want to make full use of the mattress surface. The coil layers also allow extra airflow through the mattress, so the Leesa Legend may have an edge for those who tend to sleep hot.
The Leesa Original has a medium firmness, rating around 5 on the 10-point scale, which is softer than the Leesa Legend. Because of this, the Leesa Original may be preferable for sleepers who prefer a softer feel.

Leesa Legend vs. Leesa Hybrid
Both the Leesa Legend and the Leesa Hybrid use hybrid designs that pair foam layers and coil layers. Additionally, both offer a medium-firm feel, ranking around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale. While there are some similarities between the two models, the Leesa Legend is more advanced and higher priced.
The Leesa Legend has three comfort layers: 1 inch of polyfoam, 1 inch of memory foam, and 1.5 inches of pocketed microcoils. The Leesa Hybrid uses two comfort layers of foam that total 3 inches. This thinner comfort layer offers good pressure relief, but our sleep testers found the Leesa Legend offered truly exceptional pressure relief. Additionally, the Leesa Hybrid lacks the microcoil layer of the Leesa Legend, so it doesn’t offer the same targeted support for sleepers’ midsections.

Leesa Legend vs. Brooklyn Bedding Spartan
Like the Leesa Legend, the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan has a hybrid design and advanced features engineered to promote a better sleep experience.
The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan uses several proprietary materials, including 1.5 inches of copper-infused foam, 2 inches of responsive foam, a phase change cover, and an 8-inch coil base. These materials offer cooling, contouring, pressure relief, and support.
While our testing team awarded similar ratings to the Leesa Legend and the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan, the Legend had a slight edge in pressure relief, while the Spartan rated better in noise, motion isolation, and off-gassing. Depending on an individual’s personal sleep preferences, either mattress could be a better option.
The Leesa Legend comes in one firmness: medium-firm (6.5). The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan is available in three firmness settings: soft (3.5), medium (5.5), or firm (7.5). This selection may make the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan an ideal choice for sleepers who enjoy a softer or firmer mattress than average as well as those who are under 130 pounds or over 230 pounds.

Leesa Legend vs. Casper Wave Hybrid
Both the Leesa Legend and Casper Wave Hybrid use hybrid designs that offer exceptional pressure relief. The most notable differences between the two mattresses result from their varying constructions and firmness settings.
The Casper Wave Hybrid performed better in our tests of motion isolation and temperature neutrality. The Casper Wave Hybrid’s comfort layer consists of three layers of foam: 1 inch of polyfoam, 1.5 inches of blended latex, and 1.5 inches of memory foam. These thicker foam layers can absorb a significant amount of motion, so the Casper Wave Hybrid may be a good option for sleepers who awaken easily when their partner moves during the night. The Casper Wave Hybrid’s use of ventilated foams, a temperature-regulating wool-blend cover, and a breathable coil layer may also satisfy those who tend to sleep hot.
With two coil layers, our testers found the Leesa Legend has more bounce, which may give it an edge for sleepers looking for a springier surface.

Leesa Legend vs. Saatva HD
The Saatva HD is unique in that it is designed specifically for sleepers who weigh between 300 and 500 pounds. While both the Leesa Legend and the Saatva HD use hybrid designs, the Saatva HD is specially engineered for larger individuals.
The Saatva HD’s comfort layer combines 1.5 inches of zoned, ventilated Talalay latex, 1.5 inches of 5 PCF Memory Foam, and 2 inches of polyfoam, offering substantial support, contouring, and airflow. The coil layer uses tempered 12.5-gauge steel coils. These coils are thicker and stronger than many mattresses to provide durability and support.
Because it is designed to accommodate heavier individuals, the Saatva HD is firm, rating around 7 on the firmness scale. Our sleep testers who weigh over 230 pounds rated it well for all sleep positions, especially back sleeping. Our sleep testers under 130 pounds preferred the softer Leesa Legend, so while heavier individuals may prefer the Saatva HD, lighter individuals may favor the Leesa Legend.

Leesa Legend vs. WinkBed
Like the Leesa Legend, the WinkBed is a hybrid model that offers zoned support. Most of the WinkBed firmness settings also employ a layer of microcoils for added support and contouring.
While both mattresses received similar ratings in our performance tests, the Leesa Legend received better ratings for pressure relief and the WinkBed’s Extra-Edge support system earned it better ratings for edge support. Sleepers with sharp pressure points may prefer the Leesa Legend, while sleepers who appreciate an exceptionally sturdy edge might enjoy the WinkBed.
Perhaps the most notable difference between the Leesa Legend and the WinkBed is the firmness. The Leesa Legend is medium-firm (6.5). The WinkBed comes in four firmness settings: Softer (4.5), Luxury Firm (6.5), Firmer (7.5), and PLUS (8).
The Leesa Legend and the Luxury Firm setting of the WinkBed can accommodate most weight groups and sleep positions. However, sleepers on either end of the weight spectrum or with strong firmness preferences may benefit from getting to select a more specific firmness with the WinkBed. Sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds may enjoy extra pressure relief and cradling from the Softer setting, while sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may benefit from the extra support of the PLUS setting.

Where Can I Buy the Leesa Legend Mattress?
The Leesa Legend Mattress is sold through the Leesa website. While Leesa’s other mattress models are sold through Amazon, the Legend is not yet available through the site. Customers can also try Leesa mattresses in person at select Macy’s locations, select Pottery Barn locations, 90 West Elm locations, and Leesa’s Dream Gallery locations in SoHo and Virginia Beach.

Trial Period and Warranty Details
Trial Period and Guarantee
Leesa offers a 100-night sleep trial on its mattresses.
- A 30-night break-in period is required before the mattress is eligible to be returned.
- A mattress must be clean and undamaged to be eligible for return.
- Customers can receive a full refund of the purchase price on eligible returns. Customers in Alaska and Hawaii may be charged an additional fee.
- Leesa will arrange to pick up returned mattresses.
Warranty
Leesa offers a 10-year limited warranty for the Leesa Legend Mattress.
- The warranty covers indentations greater than 1 inch, flaws in the craftsmanship of the mattress, and flaws in the craftsmanship of the cover.
- The warranty does not cover indentations less than 1 inch, damage caused by using an improper foundation, damage due to physical abuse, changes in the owner’s comfort preference, normal softening of the memory foam, and products sold “as-is” or with similar wording.
- To be eligible for a warranty claim, the owner must be the original purchaser and have bought the mattress through an authorized seller.
- A copy of the receipt may be required as proof of purchase.
- Leesa will elect to either repair or replace a mattress it determines to have a qualifying defect.
