Beautyrest Black Mattress Overview

Beautyrest Black Mattress Overview

The Beautyrest Black Mattress is manufactured by Simmons Bedding Co., a mattress company founded in 1871. They’ve sold mattresses in stores under the Beautyrest brand since 1925 and began selling mattresses online in 2019. In addition to the Beautyrest Black, Simmons sells the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress.

The Beautyrest Black Mattress is a hybrid mattress that contains pocketed coils and four foam comfort layers. This mattress has an above-average 13-inch profile and rates 7.5 out of 10, or firm, on the firmness scale.

Customers can purchase the Beautyrest Black Mattress in its Original state, or opt to upgrade the mattress in one of two ways. The Cooling Upgrade adds a layer of carbon fiber-infused memory foam that makes the mattress more temperature neutral. The Cooling + Comfort Upgrade adds the carbon fiber infusion plus another layer of foam that provides increased pressure relief.

Keep reading this review to learn details about the Beautyrest Black Mattress and to find out if it’s the best option for you. We cover how the mattress is constructed, how it feels, and the trial period and warranty that comes with it.

  • Average- and heavyweight back sleepers. The Beautyrest Black provides adequate lumbar support and conforming pressure relief to sleepers in this group.
  • Heavyweight side sleepers. Our heavyweight side sleep testers experienced support and spinal alignment on the Beautyrest Black Mattress.
  • Sleepers who prefer to sleep “on” the mattress. Despite its foam comfort layers, the Beautyrest Black Mattress is quite firm provides a flat, supportive surface with minimal sink.

Not Recommended for...

  • Budget-conscious shoppers. The Beautyrest Black Mattress is a luxury hybrid mattress, so its price-point is on the higher end.
  • Lightweight side sleepers. Lightweight sleepers who prefer sleeping on their sides might find the Beautyrest Black Mattress feels too firm unless they pay extra for the comfort upgrade.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Beautyrest Black Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

The Beautyrest Black Mattress fared well in our testing, particularly with average- and heavyweight sleepers. Continue reading to learn how we obtained our ratings, and what they mean for you.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Beautyrest Black Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

How Is the Beautyrest Black Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Beautyrest Black is covered with a fabric using a cooling technology Simmons refers to as the BlackICE 4.0 System with breathable SilkAir fiber. The company does not publish the exact materials contained in the mattress’s cover, however.

Our testers found this material to have a polyester-blend like consistency, noting that it was significantly cool-to-the-touch.

Comfort Layers

The Beautyrest Black Original contains four comfort layers consisting of .5-inch plush polyfoam, 1-inch medium polyfoam, .5-inch gel memory foam, and1 .5-inch transitional polyfoam.

While these four foam layers provide a plush surface, their lack thickness results in a feeling of sleeping “on” rather than “in” the mattress.

Customers interested in the Beautyrest Black may purchase the mattress with one of two optional upgrade choices. Both of the upgrade options are associated with a fee and add to the mattress’s comfort layers.

The Cooling Upgrade adds a carbon fiber infusion to memory foam in the mattress. This carbon fiber infusion makes the mattress more temperature neutral.

The Cooling + Comfort Upgrade adds the carbon fiber infusion along with another two-inch memory foam layer for increased pressure relief. This option increases the mattress profile to 15 inches and makes the mattress a bit softer and closer-conforming.

Support Layers

The Beautyrest Black Mattress support core comprises a pocketed coil layer encased in HD polyfoam. Simmons calls their system T3 Pocketed Coil Technology because each coil is made of three strands of steel combined together.

This support core lends to the relatively high firmness to the mattress and provides ample support to most sleepers.

Mattress Height

With 13- and 15-inch thickness options, the Beautyrest Black Mattress is a high-profile mattress. Customers who purchase this mattress will need to use deep pocket fitted sheets with it.

The thirteen-inch profile provides space for the Beautyrest Black Original to contain long pocketed coils and a combined 3.5 inches of polyfoam comfort layers. The Beautyrest Black with the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade spans 15 inches due to the addition of a 2-inch memory foam layer.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

Our testing team determined the Beautyrest Black Original Mattress rates 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which is inconsistent with the “medium” rating the company gives it on their website. We also found the Beautyrest Black Mattress with Cooling + Comfort Upgrade is a bit softer, rating 6 out of 10 or medium-soft on the firmness scale. The Beautyrest Black Mattress with Cooling Upgrade feels identical to the Beautyrest Black Original Mattress in terms of firmness.

While the Beautyrest Black Mattresses have 3.5 inches of foam layers it does not conform very closely to the body, and instead has a responsive feel. The foam layers provide a somewhat plush feel, but ultimately the mattress is characterized by the flat, supportive feel resulting from the thick pocketed coil layer.

Some hybrid mattresses provide a sinking feeling, feeling more like foam than innerspring mattresses. The Beautyrest Black Mattress is not one of them. Sleepers who want more conforming and the sensation of sleeping “in” rather than “on” the mattress will not prefer the Beautyrest Black.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Beautyrest Black Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with verified customer and owner experiences.

Durability

Customers can expect the Beautyrest Black Mattress to last several years, or the average amount of time for a mattress. The long history of the Simmons Bedding Co. provides evidence of their mattresses’ durability.

Hybrid mattresses tend to have longer lifespans than all-foam mattresses due to their coil layer, and the quality materials in this mattress should not degrade quickly. The memory foam comfort layers might develop body impressions over time, though they should not be very deep. The heavier the sleeper, the more likely the mattress will develop indentations over time.

Motion Isolation

Our external testers found similar results at home. Most sleepers won’t be bothered by motion transfer across the Beautyrest Black, but those who are particularly sensitive to movement might prefer a mattress that isolates motion better. Although pocketed coil technology has evolved over time to better isolate motion, mattresses with pocketed coils still tend to have more motion transfer than all-foam beds.

Off-Gassing

Our testing team noticed an off-gassing odor after opening the Beautyrest Black Mattress, but the scent wasn’t very strong. Within two days, the odor had dissipated. Most customers won’t be bothered by this off-gassing, but those who are particularly sensitive to smells might want to avoid the Beautyrest Black upon opening.

Off-gassing is a phenomenon that occurs with newly manufactured products as some of their construction materials degrade. During off-gassing, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air.

Pressure Relief

We evaluated the pressure relief provided by the Beautyrest Black Mattress by having sleep testers of different weights lie on the mattress as our tools mapped pressure across its surface. Overall, the Beautyrest Black is adequate at relieving pressure.

Some sleepers, particularly those of average and heavy weights, experienced more pressure relief than lightweight sleepers. Lightweight sleepers that are concerned about the Beautyrest Black Mattress feeling too firm can opt for the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade to enjoy increased softness and pressure relief.

Temperature Neutrality

Our internal and external testers noted the Beautyrest Black Mattress stays temperature neutral. Many mattresses with foam layers tend to trap heat, but the Beautyrest Black Mattress isn’t one of them. Airflow through the coil layer and cooling cover help keep heat from pooling overnight.

Sleepers who tend to sleep hot and are especially concerned about temperature neutrality can upgrade the Beautyrest Black Mattress for a fee. Both the Cooling Upgrade and Cooling + Comfort Upgrade have a carbon fiber infusion in a memory foam layer, which helps reduce heat even more.

Edge Support

We evaluated edge support by having testers sit on the edge of the Beautyrest Black Mattress and then lie near the edge of the bed. This mattress rated very good in terms of edge support. Testers did not fear they would roll off the bed while lying near its edge, nor did they slide down while sitting on the edge of the bed.

Hybrid mattresses generally have better edge support than all-foam mattresses because of the rigidity of the coil later. Additionally, the Beautyrest Black Mattress contains a support system they call BeautyEdge, which helps keeps the edges of the mattress from buckling under weight and pressure.

Noise

Our testing found the Beautyrest Black Mattress is fairly quiet, which is somewhat unusual for a hybrid mattress. Pocketed coils can tend to creak or squeak, but those in the Beautyrest Black Mattress didn’t produce much noise when weight was applied to the mattress.

Sleepers who tend to wake up easily and share a bed with a partner will likely appreciate the quiet Beautyrest Black Mattress. When a sleep partner rolls over or gets in or out of bed, there will be little to no sound coming from the mattress.

Sex

The Beautyrest Black Mattress rates very good for sex, largely because it is responsive and has strong edge support. Further, the mattress will not make loud sounds in response to movement.

People can also feel confident that the edges will not buckle, potentially leading to someone sliding or rolling off the edge of the bed.

Sleeper Ratings

Now, let’s discuss our sleeper ratings for the Beautyrest Black Mattress.

Ideal mattress firmness and thickness vary depending on a person’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to provide information that is useful to a diverse group of people, our team evaluated the Beautyrest Black Mattress with sleep testers of multiple body weights and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Lightweight sleepers were the least fond of the Beautyrest Black Mattress because the mattress is quite firm and thus provides less pressure relief to this group. Lightweight sleepers who prefer sleeping on their sides found the mattress felt too firm, while lightweight sleepers who sleep on their stomachs and backs were more a bit more comfortable.

Lightweight sleepers who specifically prefer firmer mattresses might like the Beautyrest Black Original. Many lightweight sleepers would be happier with the Beautyrest Black if they upgraded with the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade. This upgrade changes the firmness of the mattress from 7.5 to 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making it softer and more comfortable to lighter-weight sleepers.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Average-weight sleep testers who prefer sleeping on their backs particularly enjoyed the Beautyrest Black Mattress. The mattress provides adequate lumbar support while relieving a bit pressure for sleepers in this group.

The Beautyrest Black Mattress was good, but not great, for stomach and side sleepers of average weights. The mattress provided support and pressure relief, but felt on the firm side. Some average-weight sleepers might prefer the Beautyrest Black Mattress more if they opt for the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade that makes the mattress softer.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Of all weight categories, heavyweight sleepers found the best mix of comfort and support in the Beautyrest Black Mattress. Side and back sleepers in this group particularly enjoyed the mattress. The Beautyrest Black Original excels at promoting spinal alignment in heavyweight side sleepers.

Most heavyweight sleepers will not want to opt for the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade. With that upgrade, the mattress feels significantly softer. Heavyweight sleepers might feel the additional memory foam layer that comes with the upgrade causes them to feel as if they are sinking too far into the mattress.

How Does the Beautyrest Black Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Our extensive testing allows us to take note of similarities and differences between many mattresses currently on the market. In this section, we compare the Beautyrest Black Mattress with the Beautyrest Hybrid and similar mattresses from competing brands.

Beautyrest Black vs. Beautyrest Hybrid

The Beautyrest Hybrid is another high-profile hybrid mattress offered online by the Simmons Bedding Co. Customers will immediately notice that the Beautyrest Black Mattress is sold at much higher price points than the Beautyrest Hybrid. Although the mattresses have many similarities, the Beautyrest Black is constructed from higher quality materials, which is reflected in the price.

Another noticeable difference between the Beautyrest Black and Beautyrest Hybrid is the option to upgrade the Beautyrest Black. The Cooling Upgrade and Cooling + Comfort Upgrade give customers more options with the Beautyrest Black. Customers who opt for either upgrade will find their mattress is more cooling due to carbon fiber infusion in the memory foam. Sleepers who want more firmness options can choose the Cooling + Comfort Upgrade, which changes the bed’s firmness from 7.5 to 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Beautyrest Black vs. Plank Mattress

The Plank Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding is a flippable foam mattress that is firm on one side and extra firm on the other. Heavyweight sleepers drawn to the support provided by the Beautyrest Black might also be interested in the Plank Mattress. The Plank rates “very good” among heavyweight sleepers regardless of their sleeping position.

The Beautyrest Black Mattress is a slightly better choice for average- and lightweight sleepers, but both mattresses are relatively firm and better suited for heavyweight sleepers. Neither mattress conforms very closely to the body, but the Beautyrest offers slightly more pressure relief. The Beautyrest’s foam edge encasement gives it better edge support, while the Plank’s all-foam construction makes it isolate motion better and produce less noise.

The Plank is the cheaper of the two mattresses, making it better for shoppers on a budget. Further, its flippable design makes it great for people who want multiple firmness options in one bed.

Beautyrest Black vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf Mattress is an all-foam mattress available in two firmness options and sold online by Saatva. The firm option, which rates 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, is most similar to the Beautyrest Black, which rates 7.5. The Loom & Leaf also comes in medium, or 5.5 out of 10. Lightweight sleepers who want less firmness than the Beautyrest Black Mattress provides might be interested in the Loom & Leaf medium option.

Unlike the Beautyrest Black, the medium Loom & Leaf Mattress conforms more to the body, giving a sensation that the sleeper is sleeping “in” rather than “on” the mattress. Being all foam, the Loom & Leaf can trap heat, however. Sleepers who tend to sleep hot might prefer the Beautyrest Black because of its temperature neutrality. Those who are particularly bothered by heat during the night can opt for the Beautyrest Black Cooling Upgrade for increased temperature neutrality.

Beautyrest Black vs. Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt

The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt comes in two options: an all-foam mattress and a hybrid mattress. Both rate 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, making them softer to the Beautyrest Black, which rates 7.5. The Tempur-Adapt Hybrid performed similarly to the Beautyrest Black for average- and heavyweight back sleepers, but it rated higher for side sleepers of all weights and lightweight sleepers regardless of position preference.

The Tempur-Adapt feels close-conforming and has memory foam layers that “hug” a sleeper’s body, whereas the Beautyrest has foam layers with minimal conforming, providing a firmer, more responsive surface. They are priced similarly, though the Beautyrest Black becomes more expensive if you opt for upgrades. The Tempur-Adapt lags in edge support, which is important to those who sleep near the edge of the bed or use it for amorous activities.

Beautyrest Black vs. Casper Wave Hybrid

Like the Beautyrest Black, the Casper Wave Hybrid contains pocketed coils encased in HD polyfoam as its support core. The Casper Wave Hybrid differs from the Beautyrest Black in that in addition to polyfoam comfort layers, it contains a latex blend layer and a transition layer infused with gel pods. Both mattresses sport an above-average profile. The Casper Wave Hybrid is less firm, measuring 5 out of 10 compared to the Beautyrest Black’s 7.5 firmness score.

Although these mattresses seem similar at a glance, our testers found the support they provide feels very different to sleepers of different weights. Heavyweight sleepers tend to feel well-supported by the Beautyrest Black, but find the Casper Wave Hybrid to be too soft. Lightweight sleepers rate the Casper Wave Hybrid highly, and are more likely to find the Beautyrest Black feels too firm. Average-weight sleepers rate the mattresses similarly, and the deciding factor for this group will likely be personal softness preference.

Beautyrest Black vs. Saatva

The Saatva Mattress is an innerspring mattress that comes in three firmness settings. The firm option, which rates 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, is most similar to the Beautyrest Black Original, which rates 7.5. A major distinguishing factor between these mattresses is price, with the Saatva costing less than the Beautyrest Black in each size.

In terms of feel, the Beautyrest and Saatva are fairly similar. While, the Beautyrest contains more foam than all but the soft Saatva model, each mattress offers comparable pressure relief. Both beds offer very good temperature neutrality. Due to its multiple firmness options, the Saatva is a more versatile mattress, as sleepers of all weights and positions can find a version that supports their bodies. That being said, the comfort upgrade provides an additional firmness option for the Beautyrest Black at a higher cost.
